Key Features
Features both closed circuits and three point-to-point tracks, each divided into three stages. For the latter, traffic vehicles would appear in races.
Includes police pursuits, in which the player could be ticketed or arrested after a police car succeeds in catching up with the player.
Features detailed specifications, history, audio commentaries and real-life videos of each vehicle.
Replay feature which allows the player to view a saved race. Multiple camera views, playback speed and video navigation are offered.
The six tracks are all really well designed and nicely varied. There is even a short track that takes less than a minute to go around - perfect for trying to beat lap records. The 3 road courses are all point-to-point races that force players to weave in and out of traffic while trying not to get stopped by the cops. This makes for some intense, thrilling racing.
There are a few problems in this game, the graphics, which are mostly 2D sprites running in a 3D engine (similar to many early 1st person shooters) look dated, even by 1996 standards. To put it simply, the cars look bad, and since the cars are the main appeal of the game, this is a big letdown. This is made worse by the fact that the game isn't exactly running at a high frame rate. Things occasionally get choppy and driving 150 mph never really feels as fast as it should.
Okay, so we can all agree that all the newer "Need for Speed" games are better, but this game was the first to come out. If you keep that in mind, it's not half bad. It's sort of a classic. The beginning movie is really cool, the cars handle realisticly, the crashes are incredible, and the courses are pretty fun. If I wanted something to complain about, it would be the graphics, which are kinda "fuzzy" and it does take a long time to load. Two player mode is awesome and there are some pretty neat codes available for this game, too which are available here
