Key Features

Need For Speed II Special Edition Screenshot Besides smoothing out the in-game textures, the 3dfx version of the game also features additional visual effects not found in the software version, such as car reflections, weather, improved fog and horizon rendering and a rotating transparent in-game menu overlay.

The gameplay here continues to be among the most exciting and fast-paced of any computer racing game. The artificial intelligence of computer opponents is superb, as they are always trying to cut you off or sneak around you in interesting places. Full support is available for joysticks (including the force-feedback variety), game pads, and steering wheels and/or pedals; while you can control the responsiveness in each case, it is generally just right at the default level. The interface and menus are very well designed (unlike in some other racing games where one seems to face an endless stream of poorly-organized loosely-connected menus) and are very attractive to look at. You can control volume and sound quality and graphics detail, and you can load and save tournaments and replays. To add to the depth of the game, you can get tons of information (including a video and slide show) on each of the cars included.

The tracks in NFS 2 SE are perfectly good, however if you look closely you will notice that parts of the tracks can be seen in later Need For Speed games, feels a bit cheapish by EA. Anyway the tracks are good, especially the Mediterranean inspired track in which you breeze by small villages, old temples and windmills.

I guess this game will be the closest I will ever get to hear a real Ferrari F50 engine roaring. The engine sounds in the game are from the real cars. Also the dash is modelled from the real cars, so at least the game is realistic in that sense.
